Mourvèdre is a red grape variety originating in Spain where it is known as Monastrell. It is known for its deeply coloured, tannic wines with aromas of dark fruits, meat and spices. The grape is particularly important in the Southern Rhône where it forms part of GSM blends, and in Bandol in Provence where it is the dominant variety. In Spain Monastrell produces powerful wines in Jumilla and Yecla.
